A new communication board is expected to be installed at Acushnet Elementary School’s playground to help non-speaking and minimally verbal children express themselves, according to a community announcement .

The 3-foot-by-5-foot board, awarded through a grant from the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism, is designed to support children by providing visual symbols, pictures and words they can point to while playing. It will be placed near the playground equipment to ensure visibility and accessibility for students and visiting children.

Special education teacher Sierra Canastra applied for the grant in late September. The foundation awarded it in mid-October.
