WEST CHESTER, Ohio (WXIX) — The federal government shutdown threatens to cut SNAP benefits for millions of families next month, prompting food pantries to prepare for a surge in demand.

Reach Out Lakota in West Chester is among charitable organizations bracing for increased need if the shutdown continues and SNAP benefits are suspended.

“I think every food pantry like us is in the same boat. We’re bracing for the unknown,” said Brenda Yablonsky, director of Reach Out Lakota. “We’re here to help with whoever needs help, but it’s hard to predict what those levels are going to be.”

Demand already rising

The organization has already seen demand spike this year, even without the potential SNAP disruption.
