Barely more than 24 hours after the PGA Tour announced The Sentry would not be played in 2026, the Plantation Course at Kapalua in Maui announced it will soon re-open.

Closed since Sept. 2 due to ongoing drought conditions, water conservation mandates, compromised agronomic conditions and logistical challenges, Kapalua Golf's Plantation Course will be up and running on Monday, Nov. 10.

Troon, which manages Kapalua, also released some images essentially showing before and after of the property, with noticeable improvements around the venue.

The agronomy team there has been able to restore the turf to allow for public play.

“We are deeply grateful for our agronomy team and the work they have done to bring the course back,” said Kapalua Golf General Manager Alex Nakajima. “As a key contributor to the Maui economy, reopening the Plantation Course means a lot for our community and the 300+ employees who work at the course and restaurants. We look forward to welcoming guests back to Kapalua Golf’s Plantation Course beginning on November 10.”

However, golf course operators admit it's not back to PGA Tour standards.

“Since it first became a possibility that the PGA Tour would not be able to play at The Plantation Course at Kapalua due to the ongoing drought conditions on Maui, we worked closely with our partners at Sentry to assess options for contesting The Sentry in 2026,” PGA Tour Chief Competitions Officer Tyler Dennis said a day prior. “While it is unfortunate to arrive at this decision, we are appreciative of the collaboration and dedication from Sentry Insurance, a tremendous partner of ours."

The Plantation course's tee time reservation system re-opened at 7:30 a.m. local time on Thursday. Kapalua is offering a "reopening promotional rate" will be $399. One caveat: work to restore the first and eighth greens will be ongoing so golfers can only play 16 holes for "the immediate future." Kapalua will give golfers $50 in golf shop credit because of this. Also, that $399 rate if for November. The December rate is still being figured out. The standard rate this time of year is $469.

To recap the situation with the turf, the news release says:

Since early September, Kapalua Golf has followed Tier 3 water restrictions which is a 60% reduction of normal water use. Over this time, Kapalua’s agronomy team has worked hard to restore course conditions to the highest possible level. A prolonged period of Tier 4 water restrictions – zero irrigation – caused significant stress and damage to Kapalua’s two golf courses over the summer.

Kapalua Golf's other course, the Bay Course, will remain closed until further notice.

The Sony Open in Hawaii, scheduled for Jan. 15-18 at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, will now serve as the opening event of the 2026 Tour schedule.
