A Lucas County grand jury on Thursday indicted a woman in the 2018 beating death of a 68-year-old Toledo man.

Shelby McCarthy-Smith, 32, whose last known address is in Hudson, Mich., was indicted on two counts of murder, one count of felonious assault, and a single count of grant theft of a motor vehicle. She was arrested in Michigan, according to Toledo police.

The charges stem from the 2018 murder of Steve Ricks. Ricks was found dead in his apartment in the 1100 block of Gordon Street on April 28 by police.

Officers had been called at 9:18 that morning to check on his safety after one of his friends reported “unusual circumstances.” Those circumstances were not specified.

He died of blunt-force trauma to his extremities and abdominal area, according to the Lucas County Coroner’s Off
