LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - In a letter dated Oct. 22, Louisiana Congressman Clay Higgins called on President Donald Trump to use executive authority to pause all shrimp imports until the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) can ensure the safety of America’s seafood supply.
Higgins wrote that “radioactive and contaminated shrimp in our country’s grocery stores is a significant public health threat,” referencing multiple recalls this year of imported shrimp found to contain cesium-137, a radioactive isotope .
The letter urges Trump to act swiftly, saying the FDA has failed to prevent contaminated shrimp from entering U.S. markets. Higgins also cited his support for two pieces of legislation that aim to tighten inspection rules and allow federal agencies to destroy tainted imports.
