ATLANTA — The Atlanta Community Food Bank regularly serves 820,000 people across 29 counties in Georgia. With the government currently shut down, that need has been growing.

John West, the nonprofit's Vice President of Partner Relations, explained that furloughed federal workers in Georgia are now coming to food banks for assistance while they're not receiving paychecks.

About 1.4 million Georgians who receive SNAP benefits, and more than 200,000 who receive WIC benefits, are also relying on them for help.

"We’re certainly seeing an uptick in need right now because we’ve got new people who need assistance and those who are worried about the future," West stated. "Ten days from now (if) the money I need to buy groceries isn’t going to be there... I’m going to start taking action now," he
