Despite the concerns of some community members and city council members, Scottsdale City Hall will get a $2 million parasol shade structure with solar panels on top.

The city council voted 5-2 during its Oct. 21 meeting to move forward with the project that was part of the 2019 bond package.

Mayor Lisa Borowsky and Vice Mayor Adam Kwasman were the votes against awarding the construction contract to Ameresco, Inc., which is headquartered in Framingham, Mass., but has offices in Phoenix and Chandler.

The project was originally estimated to be $4.6 million, so the savings will go toward other bond projects that run overbudget, according to City Engineer Alison Tymkiw, but Kwasman likened moving money around like that to a shill game “with really good intentions.
