Newly released radio calls reveal the terrifying moments a Massachusetts family sent out a mayday after their boat caught fire near Martha's Vineyard Monday night.

"Mayday, mayday, mayday. Our ship went down at Tarpaulin Cove," a man said in one of the distress calls. "Our ship burned while we were sleeping and we barely escaped."

The Coast Guard said the family of three — an older couple and their adult son — had left Eel Pond in Falmouth last Friday. When they failed to return, a relative reported them overdue Tuesday evening.

Rescuers later located the family in a farmhouse on Naushon Island, where they swam after the fire. According to the Coast Guard, the son found the boat's marine radio washed up on shore
