Purdue basketball plans to start Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer and CJ Cox at guard and Trey Kaufman-Renn and Oscar Cluff at forward when the preseason-No. 1 Boilermakers take on No. 9 Kentucky at Rupp Arena in an exhibition Friday, coach Matt Painter announced.
Smith, the Homestead graduate Loyer and Kaufman-Renn were locks to start. Cox earned his spot over fellow sophomore Gicarri Harris and freshman phenom Omer Mayer.
"CJ's won most competitive drills since practice started," Painter said. "It's not the end-all, be-all, but it's still a pretty good stat. Winning is pretty important."
Cluff beat out 7-foot-3 redshirt freshman Daniel Jacobsen because of Cluff's rebounding prowess, Painter said.
