The “No Kings” rallies that dotted American cities this past weekend made headlines for their sheer number and intensity.

The left framed them as an existential battle to save American democracy. The right’s response was captured in a White House comment that simply said, “Who cares?” Both sides saw the protests as a symptom of national division and evidence that our republic is in peril. A historical perspective allows us to view them differently. The fact that people can criticize a would-be king is itself evidence that none exists.
