South Daytona resident Todd Buttrey knows firsthand the damage flooding can cause.

"It's been about a year through Milton. When's the last time we received 10 inches throughout our whole house?" Buttrey said.

He has repaired his home since that flood, but it is the second time it has happened in just five years. The culprit is Stevens Canal, which runs through the center of South Daytona and is one of the city's biggest flooding problem spots.

All the nearby homes and roads drain into the canal, and sometimes it just cannot handle the water. This week, Volusia County officials approved nearly $500,000 to improve drainage and increase the canal’s capacity.

Deltona also received final approval for three separate flood studies.
