Originally from Japan, Tomoya Matsusaka reached Newcastle this week as part of his long journey by foot from Cairns to Melbourne.
With only boundless optimism and bare essentials in a cart, the 25-year-old began the walk five months ago to make acquaintances and connect with others.
“I just want to meet a lot of people in Australia,” he said.
“Thanks to everyone, I was given a lot of kindness.”

Averaging between 30km and 40km a day, Tomoya admitted he had covered a distance of 2,800 kilometres so far, with a cart covered in messages of support and best wishes to show for it.
However, his odyssey has not come without challenges.
In Queensland, Tomoya walked 300km without access to adequate food or water.
