BEVERLY HILLS – Detroit Country Day scored a pair of late goals, including the decisive one in the last five minutes to knock off Grosse Ile 2-1 in Thursday’s Division 3 regional final.
“(Grosse Ile’s) Jon Evans is one of the best coaches in Michigan, bar none,” Country Day head coach Steve Bossert said. “He is an outstanding coach. Their kids, I think they played the game they had to play, and I think they played it great. We ended up being a little bit better today, which is lucky for us.”
The game-winner came with just 3:32 on the clock when Phillip Mateer bent a corner kick towards the far post that deflected off a defender and into the far side, breaking the 1-1 tie.
