The eggs spend about a month in the ocean as larvae before hatching and returning to land as tiny crabs.

Located 1500 km from the Australian mainland and 350 km south of Java, Christmas Island rarely sees such a large number of crabs survive the trek.

The vast majority of larvae never make it out of the water - instead, they are eaten by fish, manta rays, and whale sharks.
