Vice-Chancellor Alex Zelinsky is refuting accusations the University of Newcastle (UoN) has manipulated its financial status to justify staffing cuts.

National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) members engaged in a half-day strike on Thursday 23 October , which coincided with outside claims that there was no fiscal crisis at the Hunter-based institution.

New analysis from The Australia Institute highlighted the UoN had generated surpluses and boasted net assets of more than $1.8 billion at the end of 2024.

That figure is understood to be in excess of $150 million from the previous year.
