Boeing has responded to India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), regarding the sudden deployment of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) without command on an Air India flight at Birmingham Airport.

The company explained what caused the incident and why similar cases have been reported in other Dreamliners worldwide.

The sudden RAT deployment on the Air India flight has drawn attention in aviation circles.

Boeing told the DGCA that the issue is linked to a mechanical toggle inside the RAT storage system, which can slip out of place after maintenance.

Since the Dreamliner entered service 14 years ago, there have been 31 cases of uncommanded RAT deployment—meaning the RAT activated without pilot command or an emergency trigger.
