A proposal in the government's welfare reform could see people under 22 barred from claiming the health element of Universal Credit , also known as the Limited Capability for Work and Work-related Activities element. At present, claimants must be at least 18 years old, with approximately 66,000 people between 18 and 22 receiving these DWP payments.
The implementation date for this proposal remains uncertain, though it could potentially come into effect in 2027 or 2028 if approved. This change was discussed in the
