There are some seriously bad omens for Sir Keir Starmer in the Caerphilly by-election result , which saw Labour lose a stronghold to Plaid Cymru – and finish third behind Reform .

One of the battlegrounds in the Senedd seat was the Lansbury Park Estate, a name which carries an echo of arguably the last Labour leader who was forced out by the party in a revolt unconnected to an election – George Lansbury.

The Prime Minister is not likely to face a leadership challenge now, but Labour securing just 11 per cent of the vote and finishing way behind Plaid on 47.4 per cent and Reform on 36 per cent will no doubt reignite questions about his position. New Feature
