Jay Goldberg’s column is misleading when it comes to both the evidence on alcohol and cancer and the role of the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (“Labelling alcohol with cancer warnings will mislead consumers,” Oct. 17). The purpose of Canada’s Guidance on Alcohol and Health is to inform people living in Canada about their choices, not to impose restrictions, shame or harass. There is a risk continuum: The more alcohol a person drinks per week, the more likely they are to develop several types of cancer and over 200 health conditions. The World Health Organization and the Canadian Cancer Society have made it clear that alcohol is a known carcinogen, causing head and neck, breast, stomach, pancreatic, liver, and colorectal cancers. Clear information is necessary
