POWELL, Ohio — A 38-year-old Asian elephant gave birth Tuesday to a calf, marking an historic second elephant birth in the same year at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

The male calf was born by mother Phoebe at 10:21 p.m. and weighed 222 pounds, according to a news release from the zoo. Both the mother and the calf are doing well, the zoo says.

“The trumpeting of two calves in one year is music to our ears and a win for Asian elephant conservation,” Tom Schmid, president and CEO of the Columbus Zoo and The Wilds, said in a statement. “Thanks to years of planning with zoo partners, Phoebe and her baby boy are doing well, and we can’t wait to share this joy with our community.”
