New Delhi: Elena Rybakina became the eighth and last player to qualify for this year’s WTA finals after defeating Canada’s Mboko, 6-3, 7-6 (4), in the quarterfinals in Tokyo on Friday. She will join Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Amanda Anisimova, Madison Keys, Jessica Pegula and Jasmine Paolini in the tournament.
The Kazakhstan player needed to reach the semifinals of the WTA 500 event to book her ticket to Riyadh. If she had lost before the semis, Mirra Andreeva would have been the eighth and final qualifier for the WTA Finals.
Andreeva and Ekaterina Alexandrova will be the first and second options. Ranked at No. 7 in the WTA rankings currently, Rybakina had a brilliant season on the tour, winning a couple of WTA 500 titles. Her first title came on the clay court in Strasbo
