TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA)—Tropical Storm Melissa is nearly stationary near Jamaica, the National Hurricane Center said.
Melissa is located about 165 miles south-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica.
According to the NHC, Mellisa is nearly stationary, but a slow drift toward the northeast and north is expected later today and into tonight.
A westward drift is expected to begin Saturday and continue into Monday.
Melissa is expected to move near or just south of Jamaica early next week.
Life-threatening and catastrophic flash flooding and landslides are expected in parts of southern Hispaniola and Jamaica through the weekend, the NHC said.
Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph.
Gradual strengthening is expected over the next few days, before rapid intensification this weekend.
