Sheffield Wednesday have filed for administration with a points deduction expected to follow.
The club, one of the oldest surviving in world football having formed in 1867, are currently bottom of the Championship and have repeatedly failed to pay their players and staff on time.
The EFL charged the club and owner Dejphon Chansiri in June for the payment delays.
Wednesday could be set for a hefty points deduction after entering administration. Derby County were the last EFL club to file for administration and were docked 12 points in 2021.
