The Senate passed a $2.3 billion spending package Thursday that pumps money into MassHealth, financial aid at public colleges and universities and free school meals, while holding the purse strings on some funds that sheriffs are seeking for their jails and houses of correction.

The Senate also voted to restore $70.4 million to the fiscal 2026 budget through a series of veto overrides, representing just over half of the funding that Gov. Maura Healey sought to strike from the package more than three months ago. The House initiated the wave of veto overrides two weeks ago.
