U.S. Coast Guard security officers opened fire Thursday night after a driver tried to back a vehicle into a Coast Guard base in Alameda and ignored repeated orders to stop, authorities said.

The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. on Coast Guard Island, when security personnel saw the vehicle driving erratically near the base entrance, the U.S. Coast Guard’s Public Affairs Detachment in San Diego said in a statement.

When the driver continued to reverse toward the gate after several warnings, security officers fired “several rounds of live fire,” according to the statement. The Coast Guard said the vehicle’s actions posed a direct threat to the safety of officers on duty.

No Coast Guard personnel were injured. The FBI is leading the investigation, and the Coast Guard said it is cooperating
