A new lease for the Canning River Canoe Club has prompted the City of Canning to enter new waters and offer reduced waste service fees for community groups.

The canoe club had used a facility at 21 Queens Park Road, Wilson, for storage from 2013 to 2023 but from this month will use a new shed at 41 Queens Park Road.

The Canning council had been asked at its July 29 meeting to endorse a lease for the club to use the new shed, which would be used just to store about 70 craft, for an annual rental of $394.

But council members baulked at also charging the club a $424 waste fee and backed a motion from Cr Ben Kunze that a new — and cheaper — “community waste rate” be introduced for all community leases.
