COLUMBUS, Ohio— As the likelihood increases that Ohio Republicans will end up unilaterally redrawing the state’s 15 U.S. House districts to their advantage next month, so is chatter that Democrats will respond by asking Ohio voters to repeal whatever map Republicans pass.
“There’s a lot of energy for a potential referendum,” Ohio House Minority Leader Dani Isaacsohn, a Cincinnati Democrat, told reporters earlier this week. “I think people are fired up by the prospect of getting access to fair maps that they deserve.”
But getting such a repeal measure on the statewide ballot – much less convincing a majority of Ohio voters to pass it -- is easier said than done.
And Republicans have at least one way to prevent Democrats from being able to seek such a referendum in the first place.
