The Better Business Bureau is warning Missourians about a new scam called “Ghost Tapping.” Khesha Duncan, Regional Manager in Columbia, told Missourinet, “It sounds like it would be related to Halloween fun, but unfortunately it is not.”
“It’s actually a type of scamming that takes advantage of tap-to-pay credit cards and mobile wallets,” said Duncan. “Scammers will purchase a tap machine. If someone doesn’t have an RFID wallet or sleeve for protection, it will allow that person to just bump into you and scan your credit card.”
Duncan said scammers use the portable tap machines to steal payments—often in crowded places.
