The Los Angeles Dodgers will be down a key player heading into the first game of the World Series against the Toronto Blue Jays.

In a statement posted on social media Thursday night, the Dodgers confirmed that relief pitcher Alex Vesia is not in Toronto and will be missing Game 1 of the World Series due to a “deeply personal family matter.”

“It’s with a heavy heart that we share that Alex Vesia is away from the team as he and his wife Kayla navigate a deeply personal family matter,” said the statement. “The entire Dodgers organization is sending our thoughts to the Vesia family, and we will provide an update at a later date.”

The Dodgers had to finalize their World Series roster by 10 a.m. ET Friday morning.
