A new report says Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest number of young nurses choosing to leave the workforce, compared to the rest of the country.
The report, released by the non-profit research group Montreal Economic Institute, indicates that for every 100 new nurses under the age of 35 in Newfoundland and Labrador who entered the profession in 2023, 98 others left.
For comparison, the report said, on average across Canada for every 40 nurses who left the sector there were 100 who entered it.
But Yvette Coffey, president of the Registered Nurses' Union of Newfoundland and Labrador, said she takes some issues with the accuracy of those numbers.
Additionally, she said, the report "highlights" the crisis of retaining nurses in the province.
