SEATTLE — Mariners star Cal Raleigh was dubbed MLB Player of the Year by The Sporting News on Friday morning.
The award is voted on by players. Raleigh earned 46% of the player vote, beating out Aaron Judge for the top spot. He's the third Mariner to win the title, after Alex Rodriguez in 1996 and Ken Griffey Jr. in 1997. Raleigh is just the second catcher to win.
Raleigh had a record-breaking season with the Mariners, leading the major leagues with 60 home runs during the regular season, and five more during the playoffs. He also put up a dominant defensive performance.
He broke MLB records for home runs by a catcher and a switch-hitter, and broke the Mariners' single-season record set by Ken Griffey Jr. in 1997 and 1998.
