Matthew McConaughey is poking fun at himself.
The actor, 55, and his wife Camila Alves, in a new ad for their tequila brand are revisiting McConaughey's 1999 infamous run-in with the law. McConaughey was arrested in Austin, Texas, when police, responding to reports of noise complaints, found the actor in possession of marijuana and “paraphernalia” while dancing naked and playing the bongos, according to prior media reports.
"To celebrate the anniversary of his first and last run-in with the law, Pantalones Organic Tequila and the McConaugheys are releasing a dramatic reading of the police report," Pantalones said in a news release. Steve Zirnkilton, the voice of "Law and Order," is also featured in the video.
'He was totally guilty'
"What follows is a real police report," Zirnkilton says at the start of the video. "No names have been changed 'cause he was totally guilty."
The video cuts to Camila, who reads the report outloud as Matthew drums on the bongo and offers his commentary on the report.
"On the 25th day of October," Camila says, to which Matthew added, "2:36 in the a.m."
When Camila responded, "report says 2:37," Matthew joked: "They were tardy."
"Glassy and very bloodshot eyes," Camila continued to which Matthew responded, "And?"
Camila then joked, "Why can I see this so clearly?"
"Because it's happened about 45 times since," Matthew remarked, as Zirnkilton in a voiceover advised "Please bongo responsibly."
In addition to the video, Pantalones is commemorating the anniversary of the incident with a "signature cocktail - Pantsless & Famous (a riff on the classic cocktail Naked & Famous)." The cocktail includes Pantalones Organic Blanco Tequila, Aperol, yellow chartreuse and fresh lime juice garnished with a lime wedge.
"The Lost Bus" actor has candidly spoken about his arrest multiple times and even addressed it in his memoir "Greenlights."
After attending a Texas Longhorns football game, McConaughey, then 29, spent the rest of the weekend partying before deciding to "wind down" with some marijuana and the "beautiful melodic beats of Henri Dikongué" in the early hours of Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, the actor wrote in his memoir according to People.
"What I didn't know was that while I was banging away in my bliss, two Austin policemen also thought it was time to barge into my house unannounced, wrestle me to the ground with nightsticks, handcuff me and pin me to the floor."
McConaughey added he refused to cover himself up during the arrest and lashed out at the officers for breaking into his house.
He was booked into jail on drug-related charges and for resisting arrest. He pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charges and was eventually fined $50, according to The Independent.
In an interview with GQ for Leading Man of the Year 2013, McConaughey cheekily remarked he "still play(s) the congas naked,” but makes sure to "just close the windows."
