President Donald Trump slammed Colombian President Gustavo Petro as a “thug” as the two leaders have traded barbs over U.S. strikes in the region.

Trump announced Sunday that he would increase tariffs on Colombia and end all U.S. aid, escalating tensions between the two nations over strikes on boats allegedly involved in drug trafficking operations. Trump had earlier called Petro “an illegal drug leader” who is “strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs” in his country.

“It has become the biggest business in Colombia, by far, and Petro does nothing to stop it, despite large scale payments and subsidies from the USA that are nothing more than a long term rip off of America,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
