Three winners emerged at the West Valley Country Music Association’s Songwriter Contest Showcase in Glendale.

Out of 45 entries submitted by Arizona songwriters, Karmann Powell, of Black Canyon City, won first place with her song “Backyard Chickens” at the Oct. 19 event at Glendale Public Library.

Cowboy Wrecks, from Phoenix, placed second with his song “Taillights,” and Adam Hale, of Chandler, captured third place with his song “Bite the Bullet, Babe.”

All received cash prizes, a wall plaque and one year free membership to Arizona Songwriters Association.

The eighth annual event brought 14 songwriters to perform their original songs. Each was judged by three professional songwriters following a matrix and scoring in four categories.
