It should be unquestioned that the 2019 LSU football team had the greatest college football season ever.

As it turns out, it was also the last season of what was once known as college football.

The next year, the COVID-19 pandemic curtailed the sport; in June 2021, the U.S. Supreme Court's decision on name, image, likeness gave college athletes the right to earn money from endorsements. Other developments followed, like the transfer portal and revenue sharing, which allows athletic departments to pay athletes directly.

In short, college sports look far different in 2025 than they did in 2019. The old image of the student-athlete, on life support for decades, is now fully and completely dead.
