New York Attorney General Letitia James pleaded not guilty in a Virginia federal court on Oct. 24 to charges of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution.
The court appearance came after a grand jury indicted James on Oct. 9. She's accused of misstating the purpose of a house she bought in Norfolk, Virginia, in 2020 in order to get more favorable mortgage terms, saving $18,933 as a result. Her grand-niece's family reportedly lives there .
James' legal bills for the federal charges against her will be paid by a new fund created to defend her and her peers against retaliatory cases by the Trump administration, according to the state Attorney General's Office . The group representing Democratic attorneys general in 23 states announced the fund on Sept. 26.
