Families might be getting spooked in more ways than one this Halloween, including at the grocery store.
Most food items are more expensive than they were this time last year, but chocolates and other candies are notably pricier.
Statistics Canada doesn’t track holiday items like Halloween-branded chocolate assortments, but it does track confectionery items like chocolate and other sugary treats. That category went up in price by 10.4 per cent in Newfoundland and Labrador this September compared to the same period last year.
CBC News went to three different grocery stores in St. John’s to track the prices.
As of Monday, a 50-pack of mini Nestle chocolate bars cost $15.99 before taxes at Sobeys, and $10 at Dominion. Walmart was advertising 100 of the same bars for $17.97 that same day.
