Two men pleaded guilty on Friday to conspiracy and manslaughter charges while admitting they played a role in how an innocent man was gunned own by mistake simply because he drove the same type of vehicle as a rival member of a gang they were seeking to eliminate.

During a hearing at the Gouin courthouse in northern Montreal, Quebec Superior Court Justice Éric Downs accepted the guilty pleas of M’Hammed Berberi, 29, and Andrei Donet, 22, in a complex case that now involves more than a dozen other co-accused. They were charged in an investigation dubbed Mecano that was conducted by Montreal police and the Sûreté du Québec.

Berberi and Donet admitted they were part of a conspiracy to kill members of the Downtown Project, a street gang, and their allies during 2023 and 2024. They also plead
