Standing in a parking lot adjacent to the Gary Jet Center with other protestors, Debra Bolaños, an East Chicago resident, was emotional as she saw people from all age groups and ethnicities come together.

“I’m so happy to see this because I’m a grandmother,” said Bolaños, a former East Chicago city councilwoman. “I want my grandkids to know that their grandmother took a stand when we had to because this is going to be in our history books in the future, and I want them to know that I cared.”

Bolaños was one of the speakers at Friday’s “ICE out of NWI” protest at the Gary/Chicago International Airport, where about 50 people gathered to protest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Authorities, who conduct removal flights from the Gary airport.
