EUGENE — With an experienced roster that’s split almost evenly between returning players and newcomers, Oregon has a lot to work with but also a lot of progress to make before the season.
Jackson Shelstad’s broken hand makes that an even taller order for the Ducks, who have their first preseason exhibition tonight (7 p.m., B1G+) against Utah at Matthew Knight Arena.
Whether Shelstad is cleared to play in the Nov. 4 season opener against Hawaii is doubtful but still undetermined, and Wei Lin, TK Simpkins and Drew Carter will work at point guard against the Utes and in next week’s exhibition at Stanford.
The Ducks are still installing parts of their offense and defense. With six returning players, seven new transfers and one freshman, there is a lot to work through before the season begin
