The union for State Police troopers had pulled its support for former Trooper Michael Proctor’s appeal of his firing shortly before he dropped it last week , officials said.

“Following the discovery of new evidence from Michael Proctor’s cellphone, the State Police Association of Massachusetts’ Executive Board unanimously voted to sever all support for his appeal,” Brian Williams, the union’s president, said in a statement.

“We hope this decisive move closes a deeply embarrassing chapter in State Police history,” Williams said.

Proctor, the lead investigator in the Karen Read case, was fired in March after he was forced during her first trial last year to read aloud vulgar and misogynistic texts he’d sent about her to friends and coworkers.
