EAST LANSING, Mich. — Researchers at Michigan State University say there has been limited research and awareness about the physical and mental health challenges that come with perimenopause.
That is why a team from the Department of Psychology is studying the link between perimenopause and psychosis.
“Women experience this peak in psychosis risk during midlife, and this is something that men do not experience,” said Dr. Kristen Culbert, research specialist at MSU. “That research suggests there is something unique happening in women.”
The $3.7 million study follows 750 women ages 40 to 60. They will take daily saliva samples and detailed questionnaires, tracking the women’s hormone levels and psychological symptoms.
The study will look at both the hormones estradiol and progesterone.
