We love the evolution of lumber, from seed to trunk, and from plank to valued furniture item. Treat wood with disregard, though, and it will degrade and crack. But fret not, even when ravaged by the passage of time, tainted timber can still be improved.
There exist items, of course, which should not be the subject of DIY attempts: ‘bettering’ granny’s Chippendale chest, after all, could actually destroy its value.
Better to limit your restorative dream to ‘junktiques’ (our name for inexpensive older pieces with limited pedigree) and to test treatments on a discreet area, at the rear or underside. Disclaime
