MINNEAPOLIS — A crowd that was a mix of rowdy and reverent protested Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s visit to Minneapolis on Friday, Oct. 24.

About 400 people gathered outside the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building where Noem was scheduled to speak.

A group of loosely affiliated clergy led a section of the crowd and songs and speeches.

Rev. Craig Loya, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Minnesota, said it was disgraceful that Immigration Customs Enforcement conducts some of its business in the federal building that bears Whipple’s name. Whipple spent his ministry standing with those who are marginalized, Loya said.

“It is a shameful irony that his name is on this building,” he said.
