Civil rights pioneer, talk show host and news anchor. These are just some of the things Yolanda Nava has accomplished during her lifetime. Nava's parents moved from Chihuahua, Mexico, after the Mexican Revolution to Los Angeles, California, then giving birth to Yolanda.
After high school, she attended UCLA, studying history, not knowing that after she graduated, she would start a career she didn't expect.
"I never thought about broadcasting," Nava said. "I had an opportunity when I was in my 20s to host a television show called 'La Tiempo,' that aired on KMBC. I was the first Mexican-American woman to appear on a network affiliate in the second market in the country."
