Western Michigan’s hockey team handed No. 3 Michigan its first loss of the season on Friday.
Forward Grant Slukynsky had two goals and an assist while brother Hampton Slukynsky made 28 saves to life the second-ranked Broncos to a 5-2 victory at Lawson Arena.
WMU (4-2), which was shut out by Michigan 4-0 on Thursday in Ann Arbor, was the first team to solve Wolverines goalie Jack Ivankovic. The freshman had allowed just seven goals during Michigan’s 7-0 start but gave up four on 22 shots Thursday.
Grant Slukynsky scored the game-winner 32 seconds into the third period. Bobby Cowan extended the lead to 4-1 at the 14:30 mark, but the Wolverines didn’t go away quietly. Sophomore forward Will Horcoff, a 2025 first-round pick of the Penguins, scored on the power play with an extra attacker
