Mansplaining can’t alter the facts

Evan Davis, former Journal Gazette editorial writer, claimed I was “swinging my saber” at a “very small, politically marginalized population” in my Sept. 22 column defending women’s sports. I appreciate Davis’ mansplaining women’s sports to me. But facts matter.

At Notre Dame when I was among the first female athletes, I fenced foil. In fact, we marginalized women athletes could only fence foil, not the other weapons, epee and saber, which were considered too dangerous for women. I am happy to report that has since been rectified in college sports and in the Olympics. Women fought hard for equal opportunities.
