BOISE, Idaho — For John Carter, Sunday, Oct. 19, started like any other workday.

The owner of Security Services LLC had been contracted to provide security at La Catedral Horse Arena in Wilder since May, doing what he'd done all season: crowd control, searching vehicles and keeping families safe at the horse races.

That day, his two children — ages 14 and 12 — were helping him with simple tasks like wristbanding, after one of his employees couldn't attend the day's event. Carter said on Sunday that he had a team of 6 employees, including himself.

Carter, who resides in Caldwell, and his 14-year-old daughter, whom KTVB is not naming, both sat down with KTVB on Friday.

The morning crowd was small, Carter said. But hundreds arrived in the afternoon for the championship races.
