WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Day 24 of the now second-longest government shutdown in U.S. history saw federal workers missing their first full paycheck.

Friday morning, D.C.’s Urban Outreach hosted a food giveaway for federal workers, partnering with the Capitol Area Food Bank to give each furloughed household a box of shelf-stable goods and produce. The two organizations planned for around 300 households to show up.

One worker who didn’t want to be identified was one of the first to show up, saying she had heard they were giving out food and thought she would check it out.

“This is a long time, you know,” she said about the shutdown. “I’m a very optimistic person, so I hope this will end soon.”
