The 185-year-old Morgan’s Point United Church on Lakeshore Road in Wainfleet has a long and storied past.
Morgan’s Point is named for David Morgan Sr. and his son David Jr.
From Pennsylvania and of Welsh descent, Morgan was loyal to the British crown and came across Lake Erie in a canoe with his son circa 1778, fleeing the American Revolution.
Landing at what shortly after became known as Point Industry, just below Burnaby, Morgan settled on 890 hectares of Crown land with corn and potatoes for crops and built a homestead at the point.
By 1840, the place where Morgan Sr. landed had taken on his name.
At the close of the revolutionary war, the settlement was enlarged by an influx of families along the lakeshore, creating a foundation for a full community.
